What Is Truth?

In the Star Trek Universe there is a wonderful book called Spock's World by Diane Duane. It is, in effect, two different and interconnected stories. One is a lot of the backstory, IE History, of the people of Vulcan, which in and of itself is a wonderful read, and a "current time" story about a powerful and well financed group of people on Vulcan trying to engineer it's exit from the United Federation of Planets.

And there is a part that shows who Spock's parents were when they met. Meaning Sarek of Vulcan and Amanda Greyson of Earth.

They had met when they were both working on the project to create an accurate translation from English to Vulcan and back.

Later in the book there is this wonderful scene where they are discussing the way a word in Vulcan had been translated as Logic. And Sarek is teasing Amanda about how this had gone and her insistence that they needed to finish this and could clean it up in later times. And her embarrassment at that because the idea that the word Ch'Thia now meant Logic had taken root so deeply that they were finding it really difficult to change.

Because, in reality, the word in Vulcan, Ch'Thia, actually meant Reality-Truth. The Reality and Truth of the Universe the way that it Is rather than the way that we Want it To Be.

In the book Amanda explains it this way:

"Its the modern Vulcan word which we translate as logic. But what it more correctly means is reality-truth. The truth about the universe, the way things really are, rather than the way we would like them to be. It embraces the physical and the inner realities both at once, in all their changes. The concept says that if we do not tell the universe the truth about itself, if we don't treat it and the people in it as what they are-real, and precious-it will turn against us, and none of our affairs will prosper."

Reality-Truth. The Truth as it Is. Not What we Wish. And if we do not live in that Reality-Truth then none of our affairs will prosper.

None of our affairs will prosper.

So, a word that requires two words together in order to have some approximation of what it really means. Made to match a lesser word for the sake of convenience. And thus the True meaning is lost. The Reality-Truth of the word is no more.

So none of their affairs around what that word means prosper. Which also affects everything else in relation to it. Which is everything.

Now here lately We, Human Beings, have been having a lot of discussion, and shouting matches, about what is Truth and what is Opinion disguised as Truth. And what is just Wish Fulfillment Thinking disguised as truth.

And in all of these things we have lost track of the Reality-Truth of who We are. Both as individual Human Beings and the race of Human Beings. We are no longer connected to this.

So none of our affairs can prosper.

We have allowed ourselves to be Segregated by Race, by Creed, by Religion, by lack of Religion, by Sexual Orientation, by Sexual Identity, by Education, by lack of Education, by Bank Account, by Zip Code, and by the 10,000 Million other ways that we can be divided.

We allowed this.

And it did not occur in a vacuum.

The people who want us divided have convinced a pretty big bunch of people that Empathy, Caring, New Ideas, Compassion, Connection to Others, all those things and the 10,000 million other ways that make us Decent Human Beings, that help us to be a Human Community, are Wrong and a Weakness. They have convinced a pretty big bunch of people that those things that separate us are to be Feared and not Celebrated.

They have also convinced this same block of people that Selfishness, Greed, Isolation, Narrowness, all the 10,000 million ways that people can be Self Centered, are Virtues to be Pursued rather that ways that will Kill us All. That we can all exist in Isolation from one another.

So here we are, living in a world based on Lies, while the Reality-Truth of our existence is right in front of us and ready for us to engage with it.

And none of our affairs can prosper.

Those lies that divide us have us in a world where the Massively Wealthy get Wealthier and the rest of us get poorer. A world where we are at War with Everyone and especially Each Other. A world where we drive away our Friends and cozy up to those that Wish Us Harm. A world where Connection cannot exist and Subjugation and Domination are the only things that count.

None of our affairs can prosper.

Because the Reality-Truth of Life is that We Are All, as Citizen G'Kar wrote, and yes I am mixing in my created Realities to make a point, One. We are all members of the Human Family and Connected to each other in the Deepest Levels of our Being and Reality. We are all The Intelligent Design that Created Everything. Or, if you wish, We are all the Living Face of God made Manifest. Or, if you wish, We are all Aspects of the Universe that broke itself into a Gajillion pieces and made Manifest so that the Universe can Learn about Itself thru all of us as Living Beings. Or whatever it is that works for you to explain that We Are One.

And if we do not learn to be as one, to act as a family, as a community, then we are on the death spiral of a species.

We must Learn to Celebrate our Differences. Not Fear them.

We must Learn to Love Each Other. Not Hate.

For Love is the Only Rational Act.

Love Each Other or Die.
