Is a Star Trek World Still Possible?

One of the first things I wrote when I started writing this blog was a thing called "A Star Trek World". And in that I talked about what that world looked like for me. It was, and is, a beautiful way of seeing the world. In my opinion.

Since then we have had the National and International disaster that is Donald Trump. The ongoing Ethnic Cleansing in Gaza. The invasion of Ukraine. And rising tensions around Taiwan. And there is more. In Africa, Asia, North and South America, everywhere. There is a heck of a lot going on in this world right now which says that we are in trouble.

The most troubling thing for me is not all of these things going on around the world. As horrific as they are. It is the very sharp divisions that run thru our various societies.

Everywhere in the word we are seeing our societies getting fractured. Along Political, Sexual, Religious, Racial, etc, lines. All of the ways that we use to identify who we are is being used to further the separation from each other. And, ultimately, from ourselves.

We are in a crisis. An Identity Crisis. And the crisis is defined by the fact that we are being divided into sub sections of humanity. Smaller and smaller tribes of Who We Identify As. We are being told, and believing to a greater or lesser degree, that the Tribe we are in, the smallest denomination of that Tribe, is our only Community and we must Fear all other Tribes.

And it is killing us.

Mentally. Emotionally. Spiritually. Physically. In every way that it is possible to die we are killing each other. And Our Selves. For when we kill another in any way we are ultimately killing Our Selves. Or, as Surak said in the time of enlightenment, "The spear in the other's heart is the spear in your own. You are they".

So, in light of all this, is a Star Trek future still possible? Can we survive this time and create a world where we all acknowledge our common Humanity? A world where we are all valued? A world where we celebrate our differences instead of fearing them?

I say YES.

Yes. A Star Trek world is still possible.

It is not inevitable.

To get there we must all choose that vision for ourselves first. We must create a Star Trek world within ourselves. That means we Must Cast out Fear. And Surak had something to say about that:

"Here is the first part of the secret, Cast out fear. There is no room for anything else until you cast out fear... Now do not mistake me when I speak of 'casting out'. Some people will immediately think this means rejection of fear, by pretending not to be afraid. They are not the same thing. Pretending there is not a Lematya in your house will not make it go away if there is one. You must at first admit to yourself that there is a Lematya-you must first accept it's presence. Then you can call the animal control people and have them come and take it away. But until you first admit that it is there, you are going to have a Lematya in your bed every night. It may save your pride not to admit it is there, but your bed will be increasingly crowded."

What this says to me is in order to not be ruled by fear we must acknowledge and accept that what we are experiencing is Fear. And there is nothing in this world that anyone I know, and especially I for myself, ever wants to admit and accept is the experience of Fear.

We cover that up in a lot of different ways. And we lie to ourselves. We are NOT really afraid No. We are Angry. Or we are Concerned for others like us. Or we are defending our society. Etc. Never, we are afraid.

I am reminded of a part of the TV Show Babylon 5. In one part Delenn, the Transformed Minbari, sets up for a Rebirth Ceremony. And as part of the ceremony one must offer something of great personal value and share a thing that they have never told anyone else. And, I don't know about you, anything that I do not tell others ever is something that I am afraid to share. I am protecting myself in some fashion or another. Either my self image and reputation, or from consequences. And very rarely have I not also hidden it from myself. I lie to me better than anyone.

In order for me to share it with others I must first be truthful with myself. Honest about what it is and how I feel about it. And accept this within myself as True. Only then can I share it with you.

So, it takes deep introspection.

Once we build a Star Trek world within ourselves, after all, we must be the change we wish to see, once we walk thru fear and tell others those things we have never told before, then we can begin to create a Star Trek world around us.

A world where IDIC, Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations, can truly live. Where we Celebrate our differences instead of Fear them. Where every voice is heard and has value.

Where Love is the only Rational Act.

So, is a Star Trek world still possible? I say Yes.

It will take all of us to do it. And we shall have to face the things that we are most afraid of within ourselves. Together. And we shall have to help others on their  journey thru Fear.

Or we shall all die.

I want to Live.

Do you?
